Summer is here! As you plan your activities, please include
leisure reading with your family. Research has shown that students who read
during the summer maintain the gains that they have made during the school
year.Middle school students
should be reading with stamina (every day, 20-30 minutes at a time). With that in mind all Ridley Middle
School students are expected to read throughout the summer and record his/her
reading in this booklet.
Your child has set a goal(s) that will help him/her grow as a
reader. He/she has also selected to read one of the books listed in this
booklet during the summer and is required to complete all response
forms in this booklet for his/her chosen book. This goal and book title has
been recorded on the following page.See “Summer Reading Goals.” Students are strongly encouraged to read
additional books and record those titles on the “2010 Summer Reading Log”.
In helping your child select a book that is “just right”, we
recommend that he/she take time to preview the book, consider the topic, and to
read the first page or two to determine if it is one that he/she can and will
enjoy.Research shows that
allowing students to select their own books is a powerful way to improve
students’ ability to comprehend reading material and to promote their interest
in reading.
Upon returning to school your child will be expected to turn in
this completed booklet to his/her Language Arts teacher and participate in a
classroom activity about the books that he/she read over the summer. We hope
that reading this summer will be a wonderful adventure for you and your child.
These assignments will be the first graded assignments of
the new school year.
